Did you know that your four-legged companion might sometimes think you hate them? Hello fellow cat lovers, Sophie here! We spend our time showering them with human displays of affection, but it's possible they interpret our love language completely wrong. The good news? Cats have their own secret dialect of love, and mastering it will transform your bond in ways you never imagined.
01
The feline slow blink
Here's a fascinating revelation: your cat has probably been trying to kiss you all along! When they stare at you and slowly close their eyelids, they aren't just getting sleepy; this is what science calls the slow blink, or the "cat kiss." It's their intimate way of whispering to you: "I completely trust you."
Respond to them! Catch their gaze, slowly close your eyes for two seconds, then open them again. It's like sharing a secret conversation just between the two of you.
02
The food bowl vow
We all do it automatically, but serving food is actually perceived as the ultimate tenderness in the feline world. In the wild, within colonies, only individuals with absolute trust share their food resources. By faithfully feeding them, you vow to always look out for them.
To amplify the impact of this gesture, occasionally sit near them while they eat. This shows that you are much more than just a kibble dispenser: you are their family.
03
The art of giving space
This might seem paradoxical to us humans, but offering space to your cat is perceived by them as a wonderful proof of love. These small beings are extremely independent. If they retreat to their hiding spot or dodge a caress, it's certainly not a rejection; it's a simple communication of their boundaries.
By respecting their need for distance and allowing them to initiate contact at their own pace, you build a much deeper trust than if you were to impose your affection on them.
04
Decoding the purr
We tend to forget, but not all purrs have the same meaning. A purr of contentment will be deep, regular, and associated with a relaxed posture. But your animal can also purr when they are in pain, anxious, or desperately seeking comfort.
Knowing the difference and reacting with empathy — comforting them when they are stressed, or savoring the moment when they are happy — proves to them that you are truly listening. This is how they will understand that they can entrust you with their most complex emotions.
05
The head-bunting ritual
When your little panther gently bumps its forehead against yours or your legs, it's not just being silly. This behavior has a name: "bunting." It's how the cat deposits secretions from its scent glands to mark you as a full-fledged member of its family.
Welcome this gesture gracefully, and don't hesitate to gently press your head against theirs in return. It's their way of saying, "You are mine and I am yours."
06
Welcoming the kneading
If they start kneading your lap with their paws (the famous "patounage"), know that they are mentally returning to the state of vulnerability and absolute love they experienced as a kitten while nursing. They are treating you, no more no less, like their mother!
Do not push them away if their claws prick you. Instead, place a soft blanket on your lap so they can knead to their heart's content. By accepting this childlike state, you receive their highest compliment.
It is also in these moments of great trust and nurturing that I often slip in a few strokes with our PILPOIL beech wood brush: it replicates the softness of maternal grooming by removing undercoat without ever being harsh on their skin.
07
The privilege of sleep
The spot your cat chooses to close its eyes says a lot about its feelings for you. In the wild, a feline only falls asleep near individuals they blindly trust.
Whether they sleep on you, near you, or even just in the same room, they are placing themselves in a situation of extreme vulnerability. Respecting this ultimate act of faith simply means never disturbing them when they are resting, even if they have taken over your favorite armchair!
08
The gentleness of the gaze
Here's a human habit that completely confuses things: looking directly into their eyes. In the feline dictionary, a fixed and prolonged stare is perceived as aggression or a threat, even if you're overflowing with love!
The secret technique? Adopt a gentle gaze. Look at them peacefully, slowly blink your eyes, and occasionally look away to show them you're not challenging them. This is the absolute foundation of all peaceful communication.
09
Vocal mimicry
Did you know that adult cats don't spontaneously meow to each other? They developed this vocalization for the sole purpose of communicating with us humans! And when you respond to them, the magic happens.
If they give you a "meow," validate their attempt at communication by responding with a soft, similar sound. Many cats get into the game and start real conversations that can last several minutes. This shows them that their voice matters.
10
The power of simple presence
Let's conclude with the most powerful, yet most refined, expression of love: simply being present by their side without demanding anything in return. Cats are absolute masters of the present moment. Existing silently in the same space as them is the affectionate dialect they prefer.
Read a book near them, work quietly in the same room. Sharing this space and time, without trying to interact at all costs, whispers to them that they don't need to accomplish any feat to deserve your love: they earned it simply by existing.
They are ready to listen to you.
The most wonderful thing about learning this language is observing the change in their eyes when they finally realize you understand them. Try one or two of these approaches, and watch your bond transform. And you, which method surprised you the most?
